Public Safety and Emergency Response

Challenges

Public safety organizations are major users of wireless communications infrastructure and, by their very nature, require the most reliable and secure solutions available. Due to the demand for advanced communications capabilities and broadband applications, the FCC awarded 50MHz of new licensed spectrum in the 4.9GHz band exclusively for public safety use.

Unfortunately, the radio solutions that have been available in this band have been primarily limited to Wi-Fi based products that offer only limited and unpredictable throughput, and are unable to live up to the demanding standards of mission-critical or carrier-class communications that public safety operators require.

Wi-Fi based alternatives re-tune RF front-ends to operate in the 4.9GHz band and are constrained by Wi-Fi output power levels. The few non-Wi-Fi alternatives available are capacity limited, do not provide T1/E1 support for voice networking, and are extremely wasteful of scarce public safety spectrum.

Enter Exalt.

Solutions
The licensed 4.9GHz backhaul solutions from Exalt Communications were designed to be carrier-class solutions right from the start, and are not limited by the adaptations of Wi-Fi chipsets. Furthermore, they provide interconnectivity for both T1 and IP networks without compromising bandwidth, performance, reliability, or cost effectiveness.  Exalt 4.9GHz solutions feature +24dBm output power, up to 55Mbps+4xT1/E1 capacity, 10 and 20MHz channels, and synchronization for channel re-use and collocation.

The Exalt 4.9GHz solutions provide an upgrade path to higher TDM (T1/E1) or IP capacity to satisfy the bandwidth requirements and budgetary constraints of any voice and data public-safety application. Exalt fully supports VoIP and P25 initiatives by providing a migration path to digital, IP based radio communications.

And, Exalt public safety products are proudly made in the U.S.A.

Applications

  • PBX and IP backbone interconnection over the same high capacity backhaul
  • Secure campus building interconnection with proprietary or AES encryption.
  • Leased line replacement.
  • Disaster recovery links.
  • Secure and reliable emergency response and command center interconnections.
  • Security and surveillance video backhaul.
  • Maximum collocation capability with maximum spectrum utilization and installation cost-reduction.

Benefits

High availability
Exalt public safety communications products offer carrier-class reliability over leased lines or other wireless solutions.  This means that your point to point wireless backhaul connections will be there when you need them the most.

Exalt products are able to provide this level of reliability because:

  • They are able to maintain connectivity and throughput performance under the most adverse link conditions.
  • They are not based on best-effort technology like Wi-Fi, which was designed for wireless LAN client access.
  • The flexible spectrum management and interference avoidance technology means that Exalt can utilize spectrum others can’t.

.

High security
Exalt integrates a proprietary 96 bit link security key to ensure maximum link security. In addition, standards-based AES encryption is available as an optional software license key.

Seamless TDM and IP services enable long term migration
All Exalt public-safety wireless backhaul systems include T1/E1 TDM ports as well as Ethernet 10/100BaseT interfaces. TDM capacity can be easily added from 2 to 4xT1/E1 for PBX interconnections and campus extensions, eliminating expensive trunk lines from the Local Exchange Carriers, while providing capacity to all IP data and emerging IP voice and video services.

Lowest cost per megabit-mile
Exalt provides the most cost effective backhaul solution compared to leased line, fiber, and even existing wireless alternatives, resulting in the lowest cost per megabit-mile in the industry. There are no recurring costs, installation is simple, and the upfront capital investment will fit even the tightest budget.

All-indoor and all-outdoor solutions

Exalt offers both all-indoor and all-outdoor configurations for multiple network applications.  In addition, all-outdoor models are available with integral antenna or dual type-N female connectors with user-selectable polarization switching for flexible mounting and installation.

Spectrum management and conservation

Exalt understands the need to optimize on the use of scarce spectrum resources, and has designed solutions based on carrier-class requirements. The 4.9GHz public safety band is only 50MHz, and channel size is restricted to a maximum of 20MHz.  Exalt provides an architecture with unparalleled flexibility and control with the following immediate benefits:

  • Maximum channel reuse
  • Reduced antenna separation
  • Minimum channel spacing
  • Highest system density (collocation)
  • Highest combined Ethernet and T1/E1 capacity
